Pitti Palace, the home of the Medici family The Pitti Palace was inspired by ancient Roman constructions and was built to satisfy the great ambitions of the banker Luca Pitti. Luca Pitti, ruined by his banking speculations, left the Palace incomplete. In 1540 Cosimo I bought the Palace and moved there from Palazzo Vecchio. When the Medici Family died, the Palace became the home of the Lorraines until 1859. When Florence was the capital of Italy (1865-1871) the Savoy court was host in the Palace. Later on it became private home of the Royal Family. After World War II (1946) the Pitti Palace became property of the State. Back to home |
