Boboli Gardens, an aristocratic open-air museum Eleanor of Toledo, wife of Cosimo I, transformed the hillside called Boboli into the Boboli Gardens. The Boboli Gardens extend from the Pitti Palace to Fort Belvedere. It is an open-air museum with a lot of statues scattered through out the green. Visitors may see a majestic amphitheatre, the Luxor obelisk and the big bronze statue of Neptune. On the fountain in Islet, the statue of the Ocean god rises. The statue is by Jean Boulogne (1529-1608), born in Belgium. He was Italianized in "Giambologna". The "grotto" by Berbardo Buontalenti is a masterpiece of fantasy.
Camille Carot's painting of Florence (Louvre Museum) from the Boboli Gardens, expressed a high pinnacle in the contemplation of the city.
"In the warm summer light, within the circle of the hills, the famous monuments shine in shades of greenish brown, ocher and honey. Carot put his finger on the point of equilibrium between emotion and truth" Back to home |
