Fort Belvedere, a balcony to contemplate Florence "If you look down on the town of Florence below, you will feel you can almost touch Brunelleschi's dome and Giotto's bell-tower." Grand Duke Ferdinand I decided to built Fort Belvedere (1590-1595) in order to defend the Pitti Palace, provide a safe refuge for the reigning family in case of popular revolts, and create a hiding place for the Medici treasury. Today Fort Belvedere contains works of art, and organizes exhibitions of contemporary sculpture. Back to home |
